Ecuador – 8 Stops: Rainforest, Highland of the Andes, Pacific coast

After five long months that I had just spent in Peru, it was time for me to visit the next country in South America. Slowly I had to start counting my last months in South America. The best things I had heard about Colombia and so I decided not to spent too much time in Ecuador. Also Ecuador is one of the more expensive countries as the US Dollar is the official currency. I thought to stay about a month but of course in the end I added a couple of weeks. There is just so much to see in this country that is small compared to some of its neighbors. From the sparsely populated rainforest, across the Andean highlands, were the capital Quito can be found in an altitude of 2850 m, down to the Pacific coast that has a chilled surfers atmosphere. Nach ganzen fünf Monaten in Peru war es an der Zeit für mich das nächste Land zu erkunden. So langsam tickte auch meine Reiseuhr und ich musste anfangen meine verbleibenden Monate zu zählen. Da ich unglaublich viel Gutes über Kolumbien gehört hatte und außerdem Ecuador zu einem der teureren Länder in Südamerika gehört, denn der US Dollar ist dort die Währung, wollte ich nur relativ kurz bleiben. Ich hatte einen Monat angepeilt, aber wie immer wurde es doch ein Wenig mehr. Für so ein relativ kleines Land gibt es sehr viel zu sehen. Ecuador hat nur einen Bruchteil der Größe von Peru, jedoch findet man sowohl den Regenwald, eine Küste prädistiniert zum Surfen und die Hauptstadt Quito liegt mitten im Andenhochland auf 2850 m. Peru – How it is to spent a month in the jungle working with monkeys, big cats and butterflies

Only to be reached by a 20 minutes boat ride from the Peruvian jungle capital Iquitos, there is the small 2000 souls village Padre Cocha. The river here is called Rio Nanay but it flows into the mighty Amazon just some kilometers after. At the edge of the village an Austrian lady named Gudrun Sperrer settled down 25 years ago and founded her own butterfly farm. It was about ten years later when an unknown person left a box wrapped in barb wire on Gudruns door steps. Inside the box there was the young Pedro, a Jaguar, the king of the jungle. After that more people started to bring rescued animals to the farm so that it soon after became an animal orphanage and an official rescue center as well. Today besides the butterflies there are more than a hundred animals and some of them can hope for their release back into wilderness. Pilpintuwasi (the Quechua word for butterfly house) now gets visited by thousands of people each year and it keeps improving.

Nur mit einem Boot von der Peruanischen Dschungelhauptstadt Iquitos aus zu erreichen, liegt das kleine 2000 Seelen Dorf Padre Cocha am Rio Nanay, der kurz darauf in den Amazonas mündet. Am Rande des Dorfes hat sich vor 25 Jahren eine Östereicherin namens Gudrun Sperrer niedergelassen und zunächst eine Schmetterlingsfarm gegründet, wo sie auch etwas Forschung betrieben hat. 10 Jahre später hat ein Unbekannter eine mit Stacheldraht umwickelte Holzkiste auf ihrer Türschwelle hinterlassen. In der Box befand sich Pedro, ein wenige Wochen altes Jaguarbaby. Daraufhin brachten weitere Menschen gerettete Tiere zu Gudruns Schmetterlingsfarm in Padre Cocha. Es folgte eine offizielle Anerkennung als Tierrettungszentrum und mittlerweile bewohnen hunderte exotische Tiere, die leider nur zum Teil auf eine Auswilderung hoffen können, die Station Pilpintuwasi (Quechua für „Schmetterlingshaus“), die jährlich von Tausenden Menchen besucht wird.

The first thing to know is that Iquitos is quite a special place. With just under half a million of inhabitants it is the biggest city that is only accessible by airplane or boat. Hundreds of Kilometers around the town there is basically nothing but tropical rain forest. For an unarmed human being this is probably one of the most dangerous habitats on earth. If you would just wander off into any direction without any preparation the chance to die must be very close to a hundred percent.

Iquitos ist zu allererst einmal eine sehr besondere Stadt. Mit einer knappen halben Million Einwohner ist sie die weltweit größte Stadt die nur über Luft- oder Wasserwege erreichbar ist. Hunderte Kilometer um die Stadt herum befindet sich praktisch nichts als tropischer Regenwald, eine der für den unbewaffneten Menschen lebensfeindlichsten Umgebungen der Welt. Wenn man ohne eine immense Vorbereitung entscheidet einfach loslaufen zu wollen in eine Richtung, so sind die Chancen des Überlebens gering.

Days of waiting in an ugly, boring port city and an overpopulated boat from that we had fled from just before it left the harbor. This is how impressive our last bit on the way from Lima into the Peruvian jungle city Iquitos started. Iquitos is the biggest city in the world that is not reachable by land. Tagelanges Warten in einer hässlichen, langweiligen Hafenstadt auf ein schließlich viel zu überfülltes Boot von dem wir kurz vor der Abfahrt doch noch flohen. So eindrücklich begann unsere letzte Etappe von Lima in die peruanische Dschungelstadt Iquitos, die größte Stadt der Welt die nicht über Land zu erreichen ist. Peru – Tarapoto, City of Palms

On our way to Iquitos we had our next stop after Moyobamba in Tarapoto. In the surroundings of the so-called „City of Palms“ there are a couple of things to explore. There is a „Blue Lagoon“ as well as a mountain village called Lamas with an oddly placed castle in Italian-Gothic style. The city Tarapoto itself is touristically well-developed with lots of Hostels and Restaurants featuring a more or less obvious Hippie-Vibe.

Auf unserem Weg nach Iquitos haben wir nach Moyobamba als Nächstes in der Stadt Tarapoto Halt gemacht. In der Umgebung der sogenannten „Stadt der Palmen“ gibt es Einiges zu sehen, darunter eine „Blaue Lagune“ und ein Bergdorf namens Lamas in dem man überraschend ein recht großes Schloß nach italienisch-gotischem Vorbild finden kann. Die Stadt selbst ist touristisch gut erschlossen und es gibt viele Hostels und Restaurants, oft mit einem mehr oder weniger großem „Hippie-Vibe“.
